By: P. THAMILSELVAM, S. KHAIRUZI AND IM FADZLI
Abstract [show/hide]
Purpose: To assess and improve the quality of life in colostomy patients who underwent colostomy due to various causes. Materials and Methods: 112 patients with colostomy were identified and subjected for this study for past 4 years in the Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail, BatuPahat, Johor. Some patients were identified from ward, some from surgical clinic and few patients were identified through hospital record. The questionnaires were prepared by us and the study was conducted. The patients who were identified from the record, were interviewed through telephone. Results: Following this study, we identified that most of the patients were depressed and stressed .They were also found to be isolated in the family and facing multiple problems. Some patients avoided certain type of food since the smell from the colostomy bag created most of social problems. This study also identified some family members and some people in the community who were also later counseled regarding the responsibility of giving care to the colostomy patients. Conclusion: This study finally identified some good solutions which will help others and new colostomy patients to improve their quality of life and minimize their mental stress and social problems.

SINGLE INCISION LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY (SILS) APPENDICECTOMY : A REVIEW
By: T.VIKRAM, FADZLI IM , R.VINOTH KUMAR AND P.THAMILSELVAM
Abstract [show/hide]
Appendectomy is the most common abdominal operation performed in emergency basis . The advantage of laparoscopic technique over the conventional open surgery technique has already been proven especially in women and obese patients . The further improved version at present is the introduction of Single- Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS). It is a new technique developed for performing operations without a visible scar and has become an area of active research and interest within general surgeons community. A number of procedures such as cholecystectomy, appendectomy and etc have been currently being performed using this method. In Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) appendectomy, it may be more advantageous to the patients by eliminating the scars and potentially diminishing postoperative pain since there is only one wound. However, the role of the SILS appendectomy is still evolving since all published reports of the technique should be regarded as preliminary . More studies evaluating the technique in different clinical situations as well as randomized controlled trials are needed in order to assess the real benefits of the SILS appendectomy in general surgical practice. Here, we reviewed the feasibility and acceptance among surgeons towards the technique of single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) in the diagnosis and treatment of acute appendicitis
